John serves as Managing Director of The Edison Learning Institute and is responsible for overseeing all of EdisonLearning’ s new product development. He joined Edison in 1992 as a member of the seven-person core team charged with developing the company’s plan for a new school design and served as executive vice president of curriculum, instruction, and assessment until April 1999.
John came to EdisonLearning from the world of research and America’s leading universities and think tanks. Before joining Edison in 1992 John was senior fellow at The Brookings Institution and a professor at Stanford University. John currently is a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including Within Our Reach: How America Can Educate Every Child (Roman and Littlefield, 2005), Closing the Achievement Gap, with Tom Loveless (Brookings, 2001), and Politics, Markets, and America’s Schools, with Terry M. Moe (Brookings, 1990). His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Education Next, The Public Interest, and The American Political Science Review, among other publications.
John has served as an adviser to the White House, numerous state governments, and public and private schools and school systems. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. summa cum laude from Washington University, both in political science.
