Edison’s Learning Environment

At Edison Schools we believe that all students can learn appropriate behaviors in a positive, supportive environment. We also believe that schools can create these supportive environments based on a foundation of core values and character development.

Edison support staff work with school leadership teams to develop a student management plan that begins the intentional and responsive approach to helping students succeed behaviorally in school.

Schools create a student management plan that contains the following components:

  • A Code of Conduct that sets high expectations for student behavior.
  • Specific behavioral expectations for common areas in the school including the cafeteria, gym, bus, hallways, and classrooms.
  • An inspiring physical environment that reminds students of expected behavior and encourages positive interactions.
  • A schoolwide positive incentive plan designed to recognize and encourage students to exhibit positive behavior.
  • The school’s discipline code that outlines prohibited behaviors and describes levels of consequences assigned to these behaviors.
  • A school-based behavior support team created to analyze behavior data and to problem solve areas of concern.

We also work with teachers to help them create supportive environments within their classrooms that help students reach their full potential. The focus is on creating positive environments in which everyone feels they belong. Learning Environment training is an essential part of professional development for Edison teachers. Topics include:

  • Using Class Meetings to Build Community
  • Focusing on Character Education
  • Creating Expectations, Rules, and Procedures that Support Instruction
  • Using Guided Discovery Effectively
  • Using the Language of Learning
  • Understanding Why Kids Misbehave
