Assessment in District Partnerships

Regular, reliable, and strong assessment is an essential building block to improving achievement at our district partnership schools across the country. That is why we have developed some key assessment tools that underpin our district partnership school design. These powerful assessment tools include the Benchmark Assessment System and the quarterly Student Learning Contract.

PROVIDING A STATE-OF-THE-ART ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

Edison Schools’ commitment to raising student achievement led to the development of our uniquely powerful Benchmark Assessment System. This multifaceted system’s automatic scoring, sub-group reporting, and state alignment ensures that all students succeed.

QUARTERLY STUDENT LEARNING CONTRACTS

Each quarter, partnership schools plan conferences with each student's family. One teacher becomes a student's primary adviser. at the conference the advister, the student, and his or her family discuss and complete a Quarterly Student Learning Contract (SLC). The SLC reports to the family the level of the student's work and the overall quality of performance.

The SLC is more than a report on past progress. It is also a commitment to the future. The SLC asks the family, student, and adviser to agree on one goal for the coming quarter. Conference participants then identify what specific tasks they will perform to help meet the goal. Each signs the contract, ratifying their commitment to work for success over the coming quarter.
