Teaching at Edison
Each fall, Edison Schools helps our partners open the doors of schools and programs in communities across the country. Our goal is to help each partner achieve significant gains in students’ academic performance and in the quality of students’ lives. At the same time, we are firmly committed to the belief that teaching in an Edison school should be an experience of deep personal and professional satisfaction and pride.
Edison schools are places where teachers can thrive. In fact, many outstanding teachers were involved in creating Edison’s school design. They shared what is important to them as professionals, what kind of school environment promotes excellence in teaching and learning, and what sparks their curiosity and creative spirit.
Each teacher in an Edison partnership or charter school is a member of a dedicated team. Working together, the teams write curricula, determine student groupings and house schedules, teach different subjects, administer and discuss assessments, and communicate with parents regarding student progress. Teachers are given the tools they need to make their lives easier so they can focus on the important task of educating their students. Many teachers receive a laptop computer to facilitate group planning, curriculum development, and professional growth. Teachers use the computer to access curriculum standards and objectives, curriculum units and resources, and other educators via e-mail. In addition, they are able to keep student records, track student progress, correct student work, and communicate with students and their parents. At the school, teachers also have access to fax machines, their own telephones, and a voice-mail system.
Edison offers its teachers opportunities to be part of diverse school communities and school programs in which creativity, professionalism, technological sophistication, high motivation, and accountability are the norm. Edison is committed to fostering ongoing professional development as well as individualized career development plans, and supportive collegial relationships. We believe that working together, in partnership, we can make a difference in children’s lives.
