OPEN DOOR Youth Gang Alternatives

Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives is a community-based, non-law enforcement, not-for profit agency founded in1998 with a primary mission of helping to curb gang related violence and gang recruitment activities in the Denver metro area.
Gang involvement and Affiliation Prevention.
Understanding the philosphy that the most effective way to control the growth and, hopefully, eliminate youth gangs in our community is to stop the recruitment of potential youth into gangs, this component of the program is designed to reach out to school-aged children, ages five through twelve. The activities are conducted Wyatt-Edison facilities immediately following the childrens' dismissal from regular classes. The activities start with a nutritious snack, after which they will receive help with homework or be provided with educational materials to practice on to improve their school work. A strong emphasis is put on self-discipline, self-improvement, staying focused on what they are doing in class and at home, and on positive goals. Throughout this process, the children are constantly confronted with the dangers and negative results of becoming involved in a gang. At present, one hundred and seventy children are enrolled in this component.
