DTA Becomes a Local
Educational Agency (LEA)
|
| Derrick Thomas
Academy will become its own LEA effective July 1,
2006.
Essentially what this means is that DTA becomes its own school
district. Also this means that all state and federal funds will
come
directly to the board of trustees of our school and will no longer be
distributed to us through the KCMO District. This is a very
positive
thing for
our school. It will bring additional accountability and
requirements
but I believe those will all be worth it for the additional services we
will be able to provide for our children. We have been fighting
to
become our own LEA for 4 years, so indeed this is a big victory for DTA
and other KCMO charter schools! |

Carl
Peterson Donates to Derrick Thomas Academy
|
Painting by Sport Artist Timothy
Bailey
|

|
On
April 18th Alabama Sports Artist Timothy Bailey
unveiled his
painting featuring Derrick Thomas as an Alabama Crimson Tide
legend. Carl Peterson and the Kansas City Chiefs have generously
donated the painting to Derrick Thomas Academy.
|

|
The painting will be on
display with a collection of Derrick Thomas artwork in the school
conference room to inspire current and future DTA students and families.
|
 |
"We are
extremely grateful to Mr Peterson and the Chiefs for providing
DTA with such a magnificent piece of artwork," said Leah Martisko,
Principal.
|

|
The school is named in
memory of
the late Kansas City Chiefs all-pro linebacker who was nationally
recognized for his community activism and charitable
contributions. Mr Thomas was named "NFL Man of the Year" in 1993
and a "Point of Light" in 1992.
