Philadelphia School Mural Unveiling Celebrates Core Values.a Thursday, December 04, 2003 The mural wall has been created in conjunction with the Mural Arts Program to produce a vibrant and visually stunning outdoor mural that encourages intellectual, moral and artistic thought amongst the students. Muralist Sarah Moyer, assisted by Gabriel Tieberino, Dan Loftis and instructors, Wade Williams and Sandra Murphy worked with students from the Anna H. Shaw Middle School through an after-school arts program.
The mural covers the stonewall that borders the school and begins with the school name and a depiction of its façade on 55th Street, then runs the length of the school along Beaumont Street. Amidst bright and geometric patterns of colors and shapes images of students at work, musical as well as scientific instruments, and a section of the continent of Africa create a festive blend of abstract and representational elements.
"We are so proud of our students who worked hard on this project and also of the positive message that the mural promotes," said Principal Sharif El-Mekki. "It represents the "Core Values" which are an integral part of our school program and expectations for students. This is one example of our stu dents' talents and our commitment to the arts."
The dedication ceremony included speakers from the community, the school and instructors for the Mural Arts After-School Program, as well as recollecti ons by students who worked on the mural wall. Edison Core Values: Wisdom, Justice Courage, Compassion, Hope, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity..
