Dear Parent or Guardian,

The School Reform Commission (SRC) has chosen Edison Schools to work with your child’s school. We are honored to have this great responsibility. We also know that you, as a committed parent or guardian, are now wondering what this decision means for you and your child. What will be different, if anything when school opens its doors next September? What will remain the same?

Over the next few weeks and months we will be sharing very specific and important details regarding the changes ahead. You will learn more about the possible reading, math, science and social studies programs your child will be using; our plans to purchase all new materials for these programs; and, perhaps most important, the professional development training and support we will be providing your child’s teachers and principal. We also hope to learn and share more about the role community partner organizations will be asked to play in supporting your child’s education.

It may take some time until all of your questions can be answered, but we are committed to work as hard as we can to answer each and every one of them, as soon as possible. Our goal is nothing less than to help ensure that you are fully informed and that your child receives the best education possible.

In the meantime, we will be taking the following steps to provide you with updated and relevant information:
  • We have set up a toll-free hotline at 1-800-518-5484. Please call for regularly updated information or to leave a message with your questions, concerns or ideas.
  • We have set up this web-site to provide you with the most up-to-date information about Edison in Philadelphia. Please visit the site and don’t hesitate to send an email with any specific questions or concerns you may have—we will do our best to answer them.
  • We will be regularly publishing and distributing a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on a variety of relevant topics. These FAQ sheets will address the questions of greatest interest to you, available both on our web-site and in hard copy. The first edition of the FAQ series is included with this letter.
  • We are planning a series of Informational Sessions for parents and guardians. This will give you the opportunity to meet, interact and ask questions of members of our Philadelphia team. Scheduling information can be found on the hotline or at our web-site.
Thank you for your continued patience and interest. Hopefully these tools and events will provide you with relevant information about what will be different for your child when the new school year begins this September. We are looking forward to the opportunity of getting to know you and your child, and working together in the days, months and years ahead.

Sincerely,

Richard Barth
