Edison Schools Welcomes Timothy P. Shriver Nationally Recognized Education Leader to its Board of Directors

Edison Schools (NASDAQ: EDSN), America’s largest private manager of public schools, announced today that Timothy P. Shriver, President and Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics, has been appointed to fill a vacancy in its Board of Directors.

In his role at Special Olympics, Mr. Shriver is responsible for the direction and overall management of the organization’s worldwide program of sports training and athletic competition for individuals with mental retardation. Before joining Special Olympics, Mr. Shriver launched and supervised the New Haven, Connecticut Public Schools’ Social Development Project, a much noted school-based project focused on preventing substance abuse, violence, dropout and teen pregnancy. Prior to that, he was a teacher in the New Haven public schools, a teacher/counselor in the University of Connecticut’s Upward Bound program and a Fellow at the Yale Child Study Center’s School Development Program. Mr. Shriver has written extensively on emotional issues and their impact on learning. He has also applied his educational interests to film, serving as a producer for various movies and television programs, including the 1997 film Amistad.

Mr. Shriver holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Connecticut and has received numerous honors and honorary degrees. He serves on several boards, including the Board of the Compact for Learning and Citizenship and the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina. In 1997 he was asked by General Colin Powell to co-chair the America’s Promise Task Force on Youth Service.
