Edison announces opening of new charter school in Kansas City, Missouri Tuesday, May 01, 2001 Edison Schools announced that the charter for the Derrick Thomas Academy has been approved and that Edison plans to enter into an agreement to manage the new charter school in Kansas City, Missouri, starting in the fall of 2002. The Derrick Thomas Academy is named to honor the memory of a late member of the Kansas City Chiefs professional football team who was nationally recognized for his community activism and charitable contributions. In 1993, Derrick Thomas was awarded the NFL Man of the Year, an award recognizing the player who best combines on-field achievement with civic action. He was also named as a "Point of Light" in 1992 by President Bush, the only athlete to receive this honor. The charter granted to the Derrick Thomas Academy governance board will allow for approximately 600 students in kindergarten through the fifth grade.
