Edison Schools in California More than Double Statewide Academic Growth

Friday, October 06, 2000
Each of the schools scored close to the top of their individual districts in growth. For example, Edison Charter School, with growth of 87 points, ranked third of 71 schools in the San Francisco district, and Feaster-Edison Charter School ranked sixth of 34 schools in the Chula Vista district, according to results released on Wednesday by the California Department of Education. Significantly, these gains were large for all ethnic and economic subgroups within the Edison schools. Gains by African American students averaged 98 points, Hispanic students averaged 81 points and socioeconomically disadvantaged students as a whole averaged 87 points, all double the state average for all students. The API is based on results of the statewide Stanford Achievement Test, 9th edition, taken each spring by 4.2 million students in grades 2 through 11.
