Edison Schools Post Substantial Gains in Dayton Monday, June 10, 2002 Edison Schools announced today that both of its charter schools in Dayton, Ohio have posted commendable marks on the Ohio Proficiency Test (OPT), which serves as the state's primary test of academic accountability. Edison's two Ohio schools -- The Dayton Academy and Dayton View Academy -- recently received test scores for fourth and sixth graders that show considerable improvement in levels of proficiency among Edison's students. On average Edison Dayton students made an overall gain of 5.2 percent versus the state with average gains of 3.5 percent and the city of Dayton with gains of 2.3 percent, respectively. Edison fourth graders out- gained both the state of Ohio and the Dayton City School District. In all five subject areas of the OPT, Edison fourth graders at least remained the same or in most cases made considerable gains in the percentage of students scoring at or above the proficiency level. Compared to 2001, this year's fourth graders passed the same level of students in reading, 6 percent more students in math, 7 percent more in writing, 35 percent more in science, and 4 percent more in citizenship. Overall at Dayton Academy, 37 percent of fourth grade students on average met the requirements in each subject area compared to 27 percent in 2001. This same outstanding gain was seen at Dayton View where 40 percent of fourth graders achieved proficiency compared to 26 percent last year. These gains are even more compelling when compared to the Dayton Public Schools where only 1.6 percent more of the fourth graders moved into the proficient category. This was the first year of testing for sixth graders at Dayton View, which saw 88 percent of its students and 66 percent of those at Dayton Academy achieve proficiency in writing. Sixth grade students at Dayton View decreased in levels of proficiency since 2001 by 4.6 percent. In the fall of 1999, Edison Schools launched The Dayton Academy, its first charter school in Dayton followed by Dayton View Academy in fall 2000. Since their inceptions, both schools have experienced growth in their enrollments and waiting lists as a complement to their academic successes. "We are very pleased with these results. These Dayton area schools have had an immense focus and dedication to students achievement since their inception," said John Chubb, Chief Education Officer. "These most recent gains on the OPT demonstrate the level of commitment of teachers, staff and students to improving levels of achievement and proficiency. In Dayton View and Dayton Academy, Edison has created a positive educational option for parents in the Dayton area."
