Edison Schools Announces Major Expansion of Summer School Program

Thursday, May 30, 2002
Edison Schools Inc. announced today that it will be opening an expanded summer school program across Missouri beginning this June. Over the next few months, Edison’s “Edison Extra” program will operate 178 summer schools in 51 Missouri districts serving approximately 35,000 students. As compared to last summer, this constitutes growth of almost 300 percent in the number of students enrolled in the program and includes 44 new school district clients.

Edison Extra provides summer school programming for students of all academic skill levels focusing on enrichment and remediation, using nationally developed curriculum plans taught by local teachers in district facilities. Students receive instruction in core curriculum areas of reading, math, science or social studies, and language arts each morning. After lunch they choose from a wide range of elective subjects that include dance, music, Spanish, and athletics, to name a few. One dynamic course offering is “Rockets” in which students not only learn basic rocket theory but also have the opportunity to build and launch one of their own.

“Our students and teachers are excited to bring the Edison Extra program back for a second summer,” said Rick Cook, superintendent for the Sarxocie Public School District. “We have seen record levels of student attendance and outstanding achievement gains as a result of this program.”

“Although Edison Extra is new in our district, we have seen terrific interest from parents and students. Our first day attendance exceeded our expectations,” said Roy Kramme, Superintendent for the Iberia Public School District.

“We are excited to bring our years of educational expertise to the summer school environment,” said Chris Whittle, Edison CEO. “We are pleased that so many school districts have invited us to work with them.”
