![]() Edison Schools Announces Openings of Schools in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania Wednesday, March 22, 2000 Edison Schools announced that it will expand its operations in New Jersey, managing a new charter school in Jersey City, as well as adding two new states, Maryland and Pennsylvania, to its network this fall. Edison also announced that it will launch its first operations in the State of Maryland via a unique arrangement with the Maryland State Department of Education. Pennsylvania will join the already 20 states in which Edison manages schools. The Schomberg Charter School in Jersey City, New Jersey will serve 500 students in grades K-5. Under the terms of an agreement with the Urban League of Hudson County, Edison will manage the school for two years, with the possibility of renewal for the subsequent three years. Edison will also begin managing three elementary schools in Baltimore, Maryland -- Furman L. Templeton, Gilmor, and Montebello -- serving approximately 1,400 students. Under the terms of the contract, Edison will operate the schools for five years. The Renaissance Academy-Edison Charter School in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania will open its doors to approximately 670 K-8 students. Under the terms of the contract, one grade will be added each year, for an estimated enrollment of 1,000 K-12 students by the 2004-5 school.
