A School by School Response to Hurricane Katrina

Friday, September 16, 2005

Chicago International Charter School-Longwood Campus has had two food and personal hygiene drives this month for people affected by Hurricane Katrina. The first drive from September 6-9 collected eight crates of supplies that went to Pearl, Mississippi. The second drive from September 12-15 collected six bags of clothes and another eight crates of supplies that are headed to New Orleans. Pictured at left are some students who demonstrated the Edison core value of Responsibility by remembering to bring in their donations.

At the Milwaukee Urban League Academy of Business and Economics, students are learning the power that just a few pennies can have when we all work together in the spirit of compassion. Students are collecting their pennies in the giant "Powerful Pennies Helping People" jar. On September 23, the pennies will be taken to North Milwaukee State Bank to be counted. The North Milwaukee State Bank will then match our funds up to $200.00, and, knowing that we will surpass our goal, we will send the American Red Cross a check for a minimum of $400.00.

At Rosa Parks-Edison in Indianapolis, Indiana, students and staff Kollected Kash for Katrina. At home, students donated money by having lemonade stands, selling bottled water, opening their piggy banks, checking under couch cushions, and donating tooth fairy and birthday money. Students and staff also took part in a "Jeans Day" on September 9 by donating money to the fund. Initially, we set our goal at $1,000. To date though we have raised $4,000 and will continue our efforts.

We are doing our part here at Lincoln Charter School in the efforts towards illustrating Compassion. We sponsored a Dress Down Day on September 13 (on early dismissal day), in order to raise funds in support of those who affected by Hurricane Katrina. Starting on September 6, students were able to pay $1.00 and staff $5.00 to be able to break the dress code and wear their street clothes. All proceeds will be donated to relief efforts.

The entire school at Montebello Elementary/Junior Academy in Baltimore, Maryland is involved in fundraising activities. The second-grade team is in charge of the penny drive throughout the entire school. My fourth-grade students brought in pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills in order to donate to the relief effort. The school has set a goal of $1.00 per student and $5.00 per staff member. So far, the combined amount that the school has raised is $1,000.00. We are excited as we are trying for $1,500.00. We are almost there. We know we can do it!!!!

The fourth-grade team is asking for canned goods and other nonperishables from the parents, students, and staff in order to help out all those in need. We, as an entire school, have come together and are showing our compassion to those who have lost and suffered during this trying time.
