Parents and Students Celebrate the Edison Core Value of Compassion at Raleigh-Edison

Sunday, December 21, 2003
Mrs. Rackliffe's first grade and Mrs. Regas' third and fourth grade split classroom work together 45 minutes of every week on a variety of projects including core values, writing projects, and standardized testing concepts. Throughout the month of November and December these two groups have been working on the Edison Core Value of Compassion. The classes have been focusing on ways to show compassion in their community, at their homes, at school, and to the earth.

On a December evening, these classrooms invited parents and family members to come to a special compassion- themed Parent Appreciation Dinner. There was an amazing turn out of over 120 people. Students worked very hard creating a videotaped message of why their parents are special and pres enting the play 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, for entertainment. A wonderful picnic dinner included hot dogs, salads, chips, beverages, and ice cream.

"It was great watching parents socializing with each other and meeting other parents in our cl assrooms," wrote First Grade Teacher Tammy Rackliffe.

Third/Fourth Grade Teacher Kristin Regas observed, "Students learned the value of the gift of caring and compassion."
