![]() Edison Baltimore School Named 2003 Maryland Blue Ribbon School Thursday, February 13, 2003 Edison Schools announced today that one of its Baltimore partnership schools has been named a 2003 Maryland Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, and has been nominated for the prestigious national No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools Program. The national award program, whose school nomination guidelines were modified last year to be aligned with our country's new education reform goals for high standards and accountability, honors public and private K-12 schools that are either in the top academic ranks of their state or demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement. To participate in the U.S. Department of Education-sponsored program, each State Department of Education is asked to submit the names of a designated number of schools. One of six schools to be so recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education this year, Montebello is one of the three schools selected for its substantial improvement on the state assessments over at least the past three years. "In the amazing journey it has made from its position as one of Baltimores worst-performing schools only a few years ago, Montebello exemplifies the remarkable potential that exists in all schools," said John Chubb, Edisons Chief Education Officer. Montebellos nomination is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the many individuals who have been working very hard to make sure that each and every student is learning and progressing. Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick added, We are extremely proud of the progress of Montebello. It is a model for others to follow in improving student achievement. In addition to receiving a special tribute by the Maryland General Assembly, the six Maryland Blue Ribbon schools will be honored by the State Superintendent and other dignitaries at a dinner banquet in Annapolis on March 24. The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education will announce the winners of the National No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools Program in May. National winners will be invited to Washington, D. C., to be honored by President Bush in the fall. This is not the first honor that Montebello has received recently. Earlier this year, the school was granted a Maryland School Performance Recognition Award by the State Superintendent of Schools for its student achievement gains. Montebello is one of three Baltimore schools managed by Edison. A more detailed account of the academic performance of all Edison schools is presented in Edisons Fifth Annual Report on School Performance, to be released next week.
