![]() Philadelphias School Reform Commission Names Edison Schools as a Finalist for School Management Friday, March 22, 2002 Yesterday, Philadelphias School Reform Commission announced that Edison Schools is one of ten finalists competing for contracts to manage some of Philadelphias schools. Selected from a list of twenty-seven, the ten finalists include five other education management companies, four Philadelphia-based community organizations, and one university. This move is an important component of the historic partnership forged between the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia on behalf of the citys schools. In naming the ten finalists, the SRC reiterated its interest in hiring management companies and community organizations to operate up to 100 of Philadelphia lowest performing schools. The SRC says it plans to conduct interviews and site visits to schools currently operated by the finalists. The Commission stated that a final decision on a lead provider and additional providers is expected no later than April 17, 2002. The SRC has taken another important step toward the possible inclusion of education management organizations in the Philadelphia school reform plan, said Chris Whittle, Edisons CEO. Edison welcomes the opportunity to partner with Philadelphia and improve the education opportunities and outcomes for the citys children. If invited, we stand ready to assist the SRC in implementing its plan. Earlier this month, Edison was also named by the SRC as a finalist in the competition for contracts to consult in the overall reform of the district. The Commission says a final decision regarding consulting arrangements is due on or about March 22.
