![]() James M. Howland to Join Edison Schools as President/CEO of Affiliates Division Wednesday, February 13, 2002 Edison Schools announced today that James M. Howland has joined the company as President and Chief Executive Officer of Edison Affiliates. Affiliates is a new division that will make Edisons system capabilities and intellectual property available to more than 10,000 small and medium size school districts. Howland will oversee the development of Edisons rapidly growing summer school business and further develop its before- and after-school programming. He will also serve as an Executive Vice President of Edison Schools and as a member of its management committee. Prior to joining Edison, Howland held leadership roles at both American Express and Regus Business Centres. During his ten-year tenure at American Express, he served from 1997-2000 as President of Merchant Services International (MSI), a $2 billion revenue-generating organization with a staff or more than one thousand people. Headquartered in London, MSI was responsible for the merchant acceptance of the American Express Card in Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Canada. Most recently, Howland was Chief Executive Officer of Regus Americas, driving the expansion of the global leader in fully furnished office space in the US, Canada, and Latin America. Prior to American Express, he spent six years with McKinsey & Company, where he was a senior engagement manager. He received his MBA degree from Stanford and a BA degree in economics from Bucknell University. We are extremely pleased to have Jim join our senior management team. He brings great organizational and management skills which the companys increasing scale requires, said Chris Whittle, Edisons Founder and CEO. Jim significantly expands our management depth and we expect he will rapidly grow our Affiliates, Summer, and Before- and After-School business, added Chris Cerf, the companys COO. Im proud to be part of the Edison organization, said Howland. Edison is already the undisputed leader in the private management of public schools and Im convinced that its next five years will bring dramatic growth in both academic and financial terms. Im particularly pleased to be able to make Edisons innovative approaches available to a much wider group of school districts and children. The Affiliates division has been developed over the past two years under the direction of Kathy Hamel, Executive Vice President at Edison. It will launch in a number of districts in fall 2002 with broad expansion in fall 2003. Edisons summer school business led by Larrie Reynolds, President of Edison Extra, debuted last year in 42 schools with 13,000 students and will expand to more than 170 schools serving over 30,000 students this June.
