The next Every day begins with the Morning Meeting at "homebase," children's assigned classroom. During the first ten minutes or so, students are sharing issues of interest or concern to them, which vary from questions about what's for lunch to serious discussions about local or national news events. Some mornings teachers may introduce a topic, such as asking kids to imagine their future in the 21st century, to get them thinking. Later in the day, students carry out an assignment related to that topic in social studies or another class.
Group discussions are ending, and the daily "Edison live" news broadcast is ready to air. This schoolwide program is shown over the closed-circuit TV channel, and it's a student production from start to finish. Student anchors read the news while others operate the cameras and "roll the videotape" of student-prepared taped segments. There are reports on field trips and other events, and maybe a taste of the arts with a class skit on Courage or Justice. Every student who wants to participate in the broadcast gets a chance to during the year. For the school, the morning broadcast helps cement the notion that this is a community.
