J. Roberto Gutiérrez

Senior Vice President Public Affairs and Communication


Roberto is a communications specialist with 25 years of experience in business strategy, public policy, education, and community service. He oversees Edison Schools' corporate communications and public affairs, encompassing media relations, marketing communications, community development and policy strategy.
 
Roberto joins Edison Schools from The Dilenschneider Group, New York, NY, where he was a principal of the firm, counseling several global corporations and organizations on issues of policy, corporate branding, community outreach, and Hispanic marketing. Prior to that, from 2002 to 2005, he served as vice president for public affairs and communication for the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN, where he directed the university's communications and public affairs initiatives.
 
Prior to that, from 1982 to 2002, Gutierrez co-founded and served as CEO and President of HTN, Inc., Hispanic Telecommunications Network. Located in San Antonio, Texas, HTN is a national media and production agency that broadcast the weekly television series Nuestra Familia. From 1984 to 2002, Roberto produced over 1,600 half-hour television programs on topics of religion, culture, and education, including an Emmy-nominated program on the immigration debate. The programs were produced all over the world and aired on the UNIVISION Television Network. Roberto also produced feature length award-winning documentary films for ABC Television, PBS, Galavision, and other networks.

Gutierrez has served on a variety of national boards including the board of the interfaith Faith and Values network and the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops' Committee on Communication. He is a former chair of the St. Peter and St. Joseph's Children's Home in San Antonio and is currently a board member of the Forum on Education Abroad. 

In 1999, Gutierrez was awarded a prestigious honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Notre Dame for his body of work in broadcast media. Roberto received a B.A. from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX.
