Position Summary:
The Director of Special Education will oversee the services of the online instructional programs for students with special needs. S/he will provide leadership, staff development and communication for implementing an instructional program that meets the needs of Provost Academy students.
Special Skills/Experience Required:
Main Responsibilities:
Student Achievement and IDEA Compliance
" Manage and provide instructional guidance, virtual teaching and general strategies for special education advisors and students
" Manage a caseload of up to 30 students
" Oversee the implementation and compliance for IEPs and 504 plans
" Facilitate weekly communication by Special Education Advisors with parents of students with special needs
" Consult with Synchronous Tutors and support the use of differentiated designed instruction to meet student's IEP goals.
" Provide support to Special Education Advisors in various online instruction, including 1-on-1 and small group sessions
" Schedule, organize and chair all IEP/IDEA related meetings in a synchronous online environment
" Follow all IDEA procedures for the IEP process.
" Assist with locating service providers for students requiring services as written on the IEP
" Ensure that accurate and timely data is maintained by the special education advisors in the GradeBook System
" Monitor student progress in the Marks System and make corrections as required
" Assist with administering state testing and coordinate special accommodations listed on the IEP
" Work with the Director of Instruction to identify concerns and issues in the program and implement solutions
Professional Knowledge
" Maintain current knowledge regarding state special education laws and standards and IDEA
" Communicate with relevant state special education authorities about the schools special education program
" Assist Synchronous Tutors with program modifications and strategies for all students
" Participate in professional activities and organizations
" Commit to the use of cutting-edge technology
Key Relationships:
Build and maintain professional relationships with the Executive Director, other school Administrators, Special Education Advisors, Synchronous Tutors, EdisonLearning and its constituents, Parents/Guardians, Students, Charter Board, and the State Department of Education
Requirements
" Professional Certification in Multicategorical Special Education or related Exceptional Children area of certification
" Masters degree in Special Education
" Minimum five years experience teaching students with special needs
" Knowledge of state laws and requirements for special education
" Experience teaching or participating in an e-learning/online learning course preferred
" Strong written and verbal skills
" Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
" Proficiency with multimedia communication tools, such as discussion boards, web logs, email, instant messaging and audio podcasts
" Ability and availability to travel ocasionally within the state
