Position Summary:
Edison Schools Inc. is seeking a Senior Database Administrator who combines a comprehensive knowledge of database technologies with a thorough understanding of application development tools and methodologies. The person in this position will combine these technical competencies with an in-depth understanding of business processes in order to assure that database technologies are integrated into application development projects according to industry standard best practices.

This position will lead a group of database administrators in the deployment and ongoing support of various Unix-based Oracle databases and more than 350 remotely deployed PostgreSQL databases (running on RedHat Linux servers) coast-to-coast, plus several overseas.

He or she will be responsible for assuring that database designs support both business driven data integrity and application functional requirements. This person will collaborate with business and data analysts to enhance their business process knowledge and to transform logical data models into physical models and databases.

Additionally, he or she will team up with application developers to gain a full comprehension of application functional requirements and to ensure application designs and database objects, such as stored procedures, integrate in a manner that fully supports all performance requirements.

Responsibilities:

Ø Serve as the technical authority on all decisions related to the design, development, support, management and maintenance of all corporate databases.
o Provide logical and physical database design specifications to the application development team for mission critical applications. It also includes being the most technically astute resource in the company for performance tuning a database.
o Provide recommendations on technologies such as clustering, replication, rapid restore, etc
o Consult with database administration and client areas in order to resolve questions during the translation of data requirements to a physical database design.

Ø Monitor and improve on various data transmissions and feeds that are imported into the corporate databases. This includes key data from remotely deployed servers is loaded on a weekly basis to centralized Oracle warehouses.
Ø Constantly monitor and seek to improve the operational procedures around the corporate databases.
o This responsibility includes ensuring that all critical databases are backed up nightly, establishing replication services for all mission critical databases, constantly monitoring database health, security, maintenance of disaster recovery operations and continually looking for opportunities for consolidation or synergies.
Ø Formulate a disaster recovery strategy for all corporate database applications.
Ø Monitor legal and regulatory requirements for data auditing, security, and retention and implement processes to comply.
Ø Work with clients, IT staff and management to establish and maintain consistent data element definitions and provide in-depth consulting to clients, IT management and IT staff in the identification and resolution of information flow and content issues.
Ø Participate in the development and maintenance of corporate data architecture, data management standards and conventions, data dictionaries and data element naming standards and conventions for multiple computing environments to support warehousing and efficient data mining.
Ø Cross train DBAs on the various supported application databases, fostering career growth for the team by providing them with both in-house and off-site training, and teaching them the processes and procedures used to govern the corporate databases.



Special Skills/Experience Required:
Requirements:

-BA/BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience in a database development is preferred.
-At least 4 years experience in managing databases and a team in a mission critical production environment.
-Proficient knowledge of SQL92, and 4 years experience with production level DBMS systems in a UNIX/Linux environment a must with hands on experience with installation and maintenance, backup/recovery, etc.
-Certification in Oracle 9i, Oracle 10G (OCA and OCP) needed. Knowledge of PostgreSQL also needed.
-Knowledge of stored procedures and triggers is required
-Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
-Knowledge of ITIL processes a plus
-Self-motivated, ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
-Independent thinking and self-motivation to succeed.
-Excellent trouble-shooting, communication and customer service skills
